A detailed Renaissance engraving of the Roman god Saturn, featuring his traditional scythe and mythological attributes.
This engraving by Theodor de Bry depicts the Roman deity Saturn, identified by the Latin inscription 'SATVRNVS' within a ribbon at the top and 'AVREI SAECVLI PRINCEPS' at the base. The figure stands in a contrapposto pose, holding a scythe, which is his traditional attribute representing time and the harvest. He carries a small child in his left arm, a reference to the myth of Saturn consuming his offspring to prevent them from usurping his power.
The composition is framed by swirling clouds, a common stylistic device in late sixteenth-century printmaking to isolate the subject from a specific terrestrial setting. Beside him, a bull and a smaller, satyr-like figure pouring water from a vessel accompany the deity, adding layers of classical iconography. The artist employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figure and the texture of the clouds.
Theodor de Bry was a prominent engraver and publisher, known for his technical skill in copperplate engraving. His work often circulated through printed books and series, making classical mythology accessible to a wider audience during the Renaissance. This print demonstrates the clarity of line and balanced composition characteristic of his output. The inclusion of the initials 'ISB' in the lower left corner suggests this work may be part of a series or influenced by the designs of other contemporary masters, such as Hans Sebald Beham, whose monogram is frequently associated with similar mythological subjects. The print serves as a clear example of the period's interest in humanistic studies and the revival of classical themes in visual culture.
