A woodblock print by Ohara Koson showing sandpipers silhouetted against a moonlit sky. The artwork exemplifies the Shin-Hanga movement, blending traditional Ukiyo-e techniques with Western influences.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-Hanga movement. This art movement revitalised traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing, blending it with Western influences. Koson is known for his depictions of birds and flowers (kachō-e). He initially trained in painting but later shifted to woodblock print design. His work gained popularity both in Japan and abroad. He also used the names Ohara Hōson and Shōson. His prints are characterised by their delicate lines, subtle colours, and naturalistic depictions of wildlife. 'Sandpipers and Moon' exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the essence of nature. The print shows a group of sandpipers perched on a rocky cliffside, silhouetted against a large, pale moon. The waves crash against the rocks below, adding a sense of movement and drama to the scene. The colour palette is restrained, with soft blues, greys, and oranges creating a tranquil, atmospheric effect. The composition is carefully balanced, with the birds and moon arranged to create a harmonious whole.
