Description
Sanday in Orkney opens along a pale beach washed by turquoise shallows, with distant cottages above the grassy shore and a slender lighthouse below the high white clouds.
The largest of Orkney's North Isles is low lying, with fertile farmland and long sandy shores. Dunes and flower-rich machair border parts of its coast, while archaeological remains and place names preserve a history extending from prehistoric settlement into the Norse period.
At Sanday, white sand curves around a broad bay beneath a low grassy bank. Brown strands of seaweed follow the waterline, and gentle foam breaks across blue-green shallows. Small cottages dot the farther shore, with a narrow lighthouse at the distant left edge. Clear sunlight and large pale clouds give this open coastal scene a fresh midsummer mood.
