The San Domenico Altarpiece is a significant work by the Dominican friar and painter Fra Angelico. Originally commissioned for the high altar of the church of San Domenico in Fiesole, this painting displays the transition from the International Gothic style toward the spatial clarity of the early Italian Renaissance.

The composition features the Virgin and Child enthroned, surrounded by a group of saints and angels. To the left stand Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Barnabas, while Saint Dominic and Saint Peter Martyr occupy the right side. The figures are arranged within a classical architectural framework, featuring arches that suggest a sense of depth and order. Fra Angelico employs a delicate colour palette, using soft pinks, blues, and the stark black and white habits of the Dominican order to create visual balance.

Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's early mastery of tempera. The light is handled with precision, modelling the forms of the figures and the folds of their garments. The inclusion of angels at the base of the throne adds a sense of intimacy to the scene, a characteristic feature of Fra Angelico's devotional works. The original frame, which remains part of the ensemble, features smaller painted figures of saints in the pilasters, maintaining the tradition of the polyptych while moving toward a more unified pictorial space. This piece remains a primary example of the artist's ability to combine theological narrative with the emerging humanistic concerns of the fifteenth century.
