A classic 1878 oil painting by Alexandre Cabanel, depicting the biblical figures of Samson and Delilah with technical precision and emotional restraint.
Alexandre Cabanel, a leading figure of the French Academic tradition, produced this depiction of the biblical narrative in 1878. The composition focuses on the aftermath of Delilah's betrayal, with Samson asleep in her lap. Cabanel employs the polished finish and precise draughtsmanship characteristic of the École des Beaux-Arts, where he taught for many years. His approach to the subject prioritises the psychological tension between the figures, rather than the violent action often associated with this story.
Delilah is depicted with a detached, almost melancholic expression, her gaze directed away from the sleeping Samson. Her attire, including an ornate headpiece and a metallic belt, reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with Orientalism, a common theme in European art of the period. The lighting is controlled, drawing attention to the contrast between the pale, soft skin of Delilah and the darker, shadowed form of Samson. The background remains largely obscured, ensuring the viewer concentrates on the interaction of the two primary figures.
Cabanel was highly regarded during his lifetime for his technical proficiency and his ability to render textures, from the diaphanous fabric of Delilah's garment to the metallic sheen of her accessories. This work demonstrates his mastery of the human form and his adherence to the formal standards of the Salon. By choosing a moment of quietude, Cabanel invites a closer inspection of the emotional weight carried by the characters. The painting remains a representative example of the late nineteenth-century French academic style, which favoured historical and mythological subjects rendered with meticulous attention to detail and anatomical accuracy.
