Vasily Vereshchagin, a Russian painter known for his unflinching depictions of military conflict and colonial expansion, produced this work following his experiences in Central Asia. The image captures the grim reality of the zindan, a traditional pit prison used in the region during the nineteenth century. Vereshchagin travelled extensively with the Russian imperial army, documenting the harsh conditions he encountered with a focus on human suffering rather than heroic narratives.

The composition relies on a stark contrast between the deep, suffocating darkness of the pit and the singular shaft of light descending from above. This light serves as the only connection to the outside world, illuminating the figures in a way that emphasises their isolation and confinement.
