Eugène Grasset's 'Salon des Cent, 1894' is a stunning Art Nouveau lithograph advertising a Parisian exhibition, featuring a graceful woman and delicate botanical details. A touch of Belle Époque elegance for your home.

Eugène Grasset's 'Salon des Cent, 1894' is a quintessential example of Art Nouveau poster design, created to advertise the prestigious Salon des Cent exhibition in Paris. Grasset, a Swiss-born artist who made his mark in France, was a key figure in the Art Nouveau movement, known for his intricate designs and use of flowing lines. This lithograph showcases a woman, possibly an artist herself, holding a sketchbook and a sprig of cow parsley, set against a stylised background. The colour palette is soft and harmonious, typical of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, with a focus on natural forms and decorative elements. The composition is carefully balanced, drawing the viewer's eye to the central figure and the text promoting the exhibition. As a fine art print, this work brings a touch of Belle Époque elegance to any interior. Its delicate lines and muted colours make it a versatile piece that complements both modern and traditional decor. The botanical elements and graceful figure add a sense of serenity and sophistication, making it an ideal addition to a living room, study, or hallway. This print captures the essence of Art Nouveau, offering a glimpse into a world of beauty and refinement.

Eugène Grasset

Eugène Grasset

Eugène Grasset, a Franco-Swiss artist born in 1841, stands as a pivotal figure in the Art Nouveau movement. Though perhaps not as widely recognised as some of his contemporaries, Grasset's influence permeated the era through his diverse output, which included graphic design, poster art, and even furniture design. He brought a unique sense of structure and medievalist sensibility to the flowing lines of Art Nouveau, setting him apart from artists who embraced a more purely floral aesthetic. He died in 1917. Grasset's early training as an ornamental sculptor instilled in him a deep understanding of form and pattern. This foundation informed his later work, most notably his innovative approach to poster design. Unlike many of his contemporaries, who prioritised pure aesthetics, Grasset applied rigorous design principles, carefully considering typography and composition to create visually striking and highly legible posters. His work for the Parisian department store, Le Bon Marché, exemplifies this approach, demonstrating his ability to blend artistic flair with commercial imperatives. Beyond posters, Grasset's contributions extended to book illustration, stained glass, and even typeface design. His 'Grasset' typeface, commissioned by the Peignot foundry, reflects his distinctive style, blending organic forms with a clear, readable structure. Owning a Grasset print means owning a piece of design history, a testament to an artist who bridged the gap between fine art and commercial design during the height of the Art Nouveau era, and whose legacy continues to inspire designers today.
