A fine etching by Walter Sickert depicting a woman at her washstand, rendered with characteristic economy of line and observational focus.
Walter Sickert was a central figure in British art during the early twentieth century, known for his interest in the mundane realities of urban life. This etching, titled Sally: The Small Plate, captures a quiet, domestic moment. The composition focuses on a female figure standing in profile, engaged in the act of washing at a basin. The setting is sparse, typical of the modest interiors Sickert often chose to depict in his work.
Sickert employed a distinctive etching technique here, using fine, hatched lines to build form and shadow. The marks are deliberate, creating a sense of texture on the figure and the surrounding furniture. Unlike the polished academic styles of his contemporaries, Sickert preferred a raw, immediate approach to his subjects. The light source appears to come from the left, casting a soft shadow against the wall behind the figure, which adds a sense of depth to the otherwise flat, linear composition.
This work belongs to a period when Sickert was exploring the human form within confined spaces. His interest lay in the psychological weight of everyday actions rather than idealised beauty. The figure of Sally is rendered with an economy of line, yet she possesses a tangible presence. The surrounding objects, such as the washstand and the patterned fabric on the right, are suggested through minimal detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the figure's posture and the atmosphere of the room. This print offers a glimpse into the observational rigour that defined Sickert's practice, demonstrating his ability to find visual interest in the ordinary. It remains a characteristic example of his graphic work, where the interplay of light and shadow is achieved through the careful application of the etching needle.
