A Renaissance oil painting by Raffaellino del Garbo featuring Saints Stephen, Genesio, and Apollonia in a devotional composition.
This composition by Raffaellino del Garbo depicts three figures: Saint Stephen, Saint Genesio, and Saint Apollonia. The artist, a pupil of Filippino Lippi, demonstrates the stylistic transition occurring in Florence during the early sixteenth century. The figures are arranged with a sense of calm, reflecting the balanced approach typical of the period. Saint Stephen stands on the left, wearing ecclesiastical vestments and holding a palm branch, a symbol of his martyrdom. Beside him, Saint Genesio is shown playing a stringed instrument, an attribute linked to his role as a patron of musicians. In the foreground, Saint Apollonia kneels, holding the pincers associated with her suffering.
The painting exhibits the soft modelling and graceful facial features that define the artist's output. Raffaellino del Garbo was known for his ability to integrate figures into a coherent space, even when the background remains relatively simple. The drapery folds are rendered with care, showing the influence of his training in the Florentine tradition. The interaction between the figures is minimal, as each saint occupies a distinct psychological space, yet they are unified by the artist's consistent application of light and shadow. The work provides a clear example of the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical commissions in Italy during this era. The focus remains on the clarity of the figures and their symbolic attributes, which allow the viewer to identify each saint immediately. This piece is representative of the technical proficiency found in the workshops of Florence, where artists balanced traditional iconography with the emerging aesthetic preferences of the High Renaissance.
