A classic Neo-Impressionist lithograph by Paul Signac, capturing the sun-drenched harbour of Saint-Tropez through his signature pointillist technique.
Paul Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, produced this lithograph during his time in the coastal town of Saint-Tropez. Having discovered the location in 1892, Signac became captivated by the quality of light and the Mediterranean atmosphere, which he captured through his rigorous application of colour theory. This work demonstrates the divisionist technique, where small, distinct dots of pigment are applied to the surface to allow the viewer's eye to blend them optically. The composition focuses on the harbour, where the architecture of the town meets the water. The bell tower rises above the buildings, while the sails of the boats provide vertical accents against the horizontal expanse of the sea. Signac uses a palette of soft blues, yellows, and warm ochres to represent the reflection of the sun on the water and the facades of the buildings. By eschewing traditional brushwork in favour of this systematic approach, he creates a sense of luminosity that remains a hallmark of his practice. Unlike his earlier, more rigid experiments with pointillism, this later work shows a greater freedom in the application of colour. The dots are larger and more expressive, contributing to a sense of movement across the surface. The print captures the quietude of the port, focusing on the interplay between the solid structures of the town and the fluid nature of the harbour. It is a study in light and atmosphere, reflecting the artist's fascination with the southern French coast and his dedication to the scientific principles of colour perception.
