A refined Sienese School portrait of Saint Paul, featuring traditional tempera techniques and gold leaf against a gilded background.
This panel depicts Saint Paul, a central figure in Christian theology, rendered in the characteristic style of the Sienese School during the fourteenth century. Lippo Memmi, a contemporary and collaborator of Simone Martini, employs the traditional techniques of tempera and gold leaf to create a work of devotional focus. The saint is shown in a half-length portrait, holding a sword in his right hand, which serves as his traditional attribute, and a collection of his epistles in his left. The inscription on the papers, including 'AD ROMANO', identifies the text as his letters to the Romans.
The figure is set against a gilded background, a hallmark of the period that removes the subject from a specific temporal or physical location, placing him instead within a celestial sphere. The gold leaf is meticulously tooled, particularly around the halo, which features geometric patterns that catch the light. Memmi demonstrates a refined approach to drapery, using subtle gradations of colour to suggest the weight and fold of the saint's robes. The teal tunic and the mauve mantle provide a contrast to the metallic brilliance of the background.
Memmi’s work reflects the aesthetic priorities of Sienese painting, which favoured linear grace and decorative elegance over the more sculptural, volumetric concerns found in Florentine art of the same era. The facial features of Saint Paul are rendered with a degree of individual character, yet they remain within the established iconographic conventions of the time. The pointed arch of the panel suggests it was originally part of a larger polyptych, likely forming one of the side panels in a multi-tiered altarpiece. This print captures the luminosity of the original tempera and the precise application of gold leaf, offering a clear view of the artist's technical skill and the formal qualities of early Italian panel painting.
