A 1519 woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien depicting Saint Matthew with a halberd and book, rendered in the precise, linear style of the German Renaissance.
This woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien, dated 1519, depicts Saint Matthew as an elderly, bearded figure holding a halberd and an open book. Baldung Grien, a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, developed a distinct style that often leaned towards the expressive and the macabre. In this print, the artist employs sharp, angular lines to define the heavy folds of the saint's robes, creating a sense of volume and weight typical of the German Renaissance tradition.
The composition is vertical and contained, with the figure of the saint occupying the majority of the frame. The halberd, a weapon associated with the martyrdom of Saint Matthew, serves as a strong diagonal element that balances the figure's posture. The open book, which the saint studies with a focused expression, suggests his role as an evangelist. The background is minimal, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the characterisation of the face and the texture of the drapery.
Baldung Grien's mastery of the woodcut medium is evident in the precision of the hatching. He uses varying line weights to suggest shadow and form, particularly in the deep recesses of the cloak and the contours of the saint's hands. The inclusion of his monogram, HB, and the date 1519, confirms this work as part of his mature period. This print reflects the technical rigour of early sixteenth-century German printmaking, where the economy of line was essential for clarity in reproduction. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in combining religious narrative with a heightened sense of individual human presence.
