A detailed seventeenth-century engraving of Saint Mark the Evangelist accompanied by his symbolic lion, rendered with technical precision.
This engraving by François van den Hoeye depicts Saint Mark the Evangelist, a subject frequently explored in Northern European printmaking during the early seventeenth century. The composition follows the traditional iconographic convention of the saint seated at a desk, engaged in the act of writing his Gospel. Beside him, the lion, his symbolic attribute, peers over his shoulder with a direct, almost human gaze. The artist employs precise, rhythmic hatching to define the folds of the saint's drapery and the texture of the lion's mane, demonstrating the technical rigour common to the period.
The saint is shown in a moment of contemplation, his hand resting against his cheek as he pauses from his work. On the desk, the tools of his trade are clearly rendered: an inkwell, a quill, and a small vessel. The inclusion of a Latin inscription at the base of the print, 'Forma leonis adest MARCO instar naq leonis Rugit et exclamat: sit via plana Dei', provides a theological context, linking the lion to the voice of the saint crying out in the wilderness. The background is kept relatively simple, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the evangelist and his symbolic companion.
Van den Hoeye's work reflects the influence of the Antwerp school of printmakers, who were skilled at translating complex theological narratives into accessible visual forms. The print is characterised by its clean lines and balanced composition, typical of the period's approach to religious subject matter. It serves as a fine example of the technical proficiency achieved by engravers working in the Low Countries during this era, where the medium was used to disseminate both devotional imagery and classical motifs to a wider audience.
