A detailed 1650 engraving by Cornelis Visscher depicting Saint Luke the Evangelist at work, accompanied by his traditional ox attribute.
This engraving by Cornelis Visscher, dated 1650, depicts Saint Luke the Evangelist in the act of writing his Gospel. Visscher, a skilled printmaker from Haarlem, demonstrates his mastery of the burin through the varied textures of the saint's fur-trimmed robes, the weathered skin of his hands, and the soft, atmospheric rendering of the ox, which serves as the traditional iconographic attribute of the saint. The composition is tightly focused, placing the figure at a desk with an open book and a quill, while a small easel in the background displays a faint sketch of the Virgin and Child, referencing the tradition that Saint Luke was a painter of religious subjects.
The technical precision of the work is characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age, a period when printmaking reached a high level of refinement. Visscher employs a system of cross-hatching and fine lines to create depth and volume, particularly in the drapery of the cloak and the musculature of the saint's face. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the act of writing, with the saint's gaze meeting the viewer directly. The inclusion of the ox, peering over the saint's shoulder, adds a naturalistic element to the otherwise formal religious scene. This print reflects the period's interest in combining classical iconography with the detailed, observational style common in seventeenth-century Dutch art. The work is signed and dated in the lower margin, confirming its origin in Haarlem. It remains a clear example of the high standards of craftsmanship maintained by Visscher during his brief but productive career.
