A late fourteenth-century tempera panel by Giovanni di Bartolomeo Cristiani depicting the trial of Saint Lucy before the governor Paschasius.
This panel, attributed to the Pistoiese painter Giovanni di Bartolomeo Cristiani, depicts a specific episode from the hagiography of Saint Lucy. The composition focuses on the confrontation between the saint and the Roman governor Paschasius. Lucy stands with a calm demeanour, her haloed figure contrasting with the armed guards surrounding her. The governor sits upon an elevated throne, his posture authoritative as he gestures towards the saint. The artist employs a flattened perspective typical of the period, prioritising narrative clarity over spatial depth.
The figures are rendered with precise outlines and a controlled colour palette. The use of gold leaf, particularly in the halo and the decorative elements of the throne, reflects the aesthetic conventions of late fourteenth-century Italian painting. The guards carry shields adorned with heraldic motifs, including a prominent scorpion, which adds a layer of symbolic detail to the scene. The architecture is suggested through simple lines, framing the figures within a confined interior space.
Cristiani was active in Pistoia during the latter half of the fourteenth century. His work aligns with the stylistic developments of the Tuscan school, where the influence of Giotto remained a guiding force for narrative composition. This panel likely formed part of a larger polyptych or a series of narrative scenes dedicated to the life of the saint. The preservation of the original gilded frame contributes to the historical character of the object. The work provides a clear example of how religious narratives were communicated to a medieval audience through structured, symbolic imagery. The attention to costume, particularly the flowing robes of the saint and the structured armour of the soldiers, demonstrates the artist's focus on period-appropriate detail.
