A Flemish Renaissance panel painting by Adriaen Isenbrant depicting Saint John the Baptist and Saint Jerome in a formal, devotional arrangement.
This work by Adriaen Isenbrant features two distinct figures, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Jerome, presented as if standing within a carved architectural frame. Isenbrant, a member of the Bruges Guild of Saint Luke, was active during the early sixteenth century and produced numerous devotional panels. His style is characteristic of the Flemish tradition, marked by careful attention to textile folds and a specific approach to facial modelling.
On the left, Saint John the Baptist holds the Agnus Dei, or Lamb of God, a traditional attribute signifying his role as the precursor to Christ. He stands on a hexagonal plinth, draped in a red mantle over a simple garment. To the right, Saint Jerome is depicted in his role as a scholar, writing in a book. He wears a red habit, and a lion, his traditional companion, rests at his feet. The figures are placed against a dark, neutral background, which allows the saturated red garments to dominate the visual field. The painting is executed on wood panel, a standard support for Northern Renaissance artists of this period.
Isenbrant often collaborated with other masters in Bruges, and his output includes many diptychs and triptychs intended for private devotion. The composition here suggests this panel may have functioned as a wing of a larger altarpiece. The treatment of the figures, with their elongated proportions and calm expressions, aligns with the aesthetic preferences of the Bruges school during the early decades of the sixteenth century. The work demonstrates the technical precision expected of a master painter in the Low Countries, focusing on the clarity of religious iconography and the tactile quality of the subjects' clothing.
