Rogier van der Weyden
A detailed triptych by Rogier van der Weyden depicting the life and death of Saint John the Baptist through three distinct narrative panels.
The Saint John Altarpiece, also known as the St. John Triptych, is a masterwork of Early Netherlandish painting attributed to Rogier van der Weyden. This triptych follows a traditional narrative structure, depicting the birth of John the Baptist on the left panel, the baptism of Christ in the centre, and the beheading of John the Baptist on the right. Van der Weyden employs a sophisticated use of architectural framing, where each scene is contained within a painted stone archway decorated with small, sculptural figures that provide context to the primary events. The left panel shows the birth of John the Baptist, with Elizabeth resting in a bed while attendants care for the infant. The central panel captures the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan, featuring a dramatic depiction of the Holy Spirit descending from above. The right panel presents the grim conclusion of the narrative, showing Salome receiving the head of the Baptist. Throughout the work, the artist demonstrates a keen eye for material textures, from the heavy folds of the drapery to the reflective surfaces of the interior settings. Van der Weyden was a central figure in the development of Northern European painting during the fifteenth century. His approach to human emotion and physical detail set a standard for his contemporaries. The figures possess a sculptural quality, and the spatial depth is managed through the careful placement of architectural elements and receding landscapes. This triptych remains a primary example of the devotional art produced for wealthy patrons in the Low Countries, reflecting the technical precision and theological focus of the period. The work is currently housed in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, where it continues to be studied for its composition and narrative clarity.
