A fine mezzotint by James McArdell depicting Saint Jerome in prayer, accompanied by his traditional symbols of a lion, skull, and crucifix.
This mezzotint by James McArdell depicts Saint Jerome in a moment of solitary devotion. The composition follows traditional iconography, showing the saint kneeling in a wilderness setting. He holds a crucifix, while a skull and an open book rest on a stone ledge nearby. A lion, the traditional companion of Saint Jerome, sits at the lower right, gazing directly at the viewer. Above, a group of putti emerges from clouds, providing a celestial counterpoint to the earthly penance of the saint.
McArdell was a master of the mezzotint process, a technique that allows for subtle gradations of tone and soft transitions between light and shadow. This print demonstrates his ability to render the textures of skin, fabric, and the atmospheric quality of the clouds through the careful manipulation of the copper plate. The dramatic lighting, characteristic of the Baroque period, directs the eye toward the saint, whose upward gaze suggests a spiritual connection to the divine figures above.
Saint Jerome is frequently portrayed in this manner, reflecting his life as a hermit and scholar. The inclusion of the skull serves as a memento mori, a reminder of the transience of life. The lion, according to legend, became the saint's companion after he removed a thorn from its paw. McArdell's work captures the emotional weight of the scene through the contrast between the dark, moody background and the illuminated figures. This print is an example of the high level of technical skill achieved by eighteenth-century printmakers in London, who often translated paintings into monochrome prints for a wider audience. The composition balances the physical presence of the saint with the ethereal nature of the heavenly vision, creating a cohesive narrative within the frame.
