A detailed 1627 engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, depicting the legendary struggle between Saint George and the dragon, based on a composition by Raphael.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, dated 1627, depicts the classic narrative of Saint George overcoming the dragon. Vorsterman, a skilled Flemish printmaker, produced this work after a composition by Raphael. The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of seventeenth-century reproductive engraving, utilising a system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to define form, texture, and atmospheric depth.
In the foreground, Saint George sits atop a rearing horse, his lance directed towards the beast. The dragon is positioned at the base of a rocky outcrop, its form coiled and defensive. To the left, a female figure, traditionally identified as the princess, kneels in prayer, her posture providing a quiet counterpoint to the dynamic struggle occurring in the centre. The background features a sparse, wooded area and distant architectural elements, rendered with fine lines that suggest distance and scale.
Vorsterman was known for his collaboration with Peter Paul Rubens, and his work often reflects the influence of the Flemish school in its attention to anatomical detail and dramatic tension. The inclusion of a Latin inscription at the base of the print, dedicated to William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, identifies the patron and provides historical context for the commission. The print is a fine example of how European masters translated the compositions of Italian Renaissance painters into the medium of engraving, allowing for the wider dissemination of such imagery across the continent. The composition balances the heroic action of the knight with the serene presence of the princess, creating a structured narrative space typical of the period.
