A dramatic late sixteenth-century woodcut by Giuseppe Scolari, depicting the intense struggle between Saint George and the dragon.
This woodcut by Giuseppe Scolari depicts the legendary encounter between Saint George and the dragon. Scolari, an Italian artist active in the late sixteenth century, utilised the woodcut medium to create high-contrast imagery. The composition focuses on the dynamic movement of the horse and the dramatic posture of the saint, who is shown in the act of combat. The dragon occupies the lower right, its form coiled and serpentine, providing a counterpoint to the vertical energy of the rider.
Scolari is known for his bold approach to the woodblock, often employing heavy, expressive lines that define form through shadow and light rather than subtle shading. The sky is rendered with rhythmic, parallel marks that suggest a turbulent atmosphere, while the rocky terrain is suggested through jagged, dark strokes. The figure of Saint George wears elaborate, plumed headgear and flowing drapery, typical of the theatricality found in Mannerist art. The horse is depicted with a muscular, almost human-like intensity in its expression, reflecting the period's interest in conveying emotion through animal subjects.
This print demonstrates the technical skill required to carve such expressive detail into wood. The stark black-and-white contrast creates a sense of urgency and drama, typical of the period's religious iconography. By focusing on the physical struggle, Scolari captures the tension of the myth. The work remains a fine example of late Renaissance printmaking, where the artist's hand is visible in every mark. The composition avoids static balance, opting instead for a sense of instability and action that draws the viewer into the narrative. It is a piece that rewards close inspection, revealing the precision of the carving in the rendering of the horse's mane and the dragon's scales.
