A detailed woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting Saint Bernard in prayer before the Man of Sorrows.
This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts the Man of Sorrows, a devotional image of Christ after the crucifixion, seated upon a stone ledge. He is shown with the crown of thorns and the wounds of the passion, holding a bundle of rods. Opposite him, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux kneels in prayer, his hands raised in a gesture of contemplation. A mitre and crozier, symbols of the saint's ecclesiastical office, rest on the ground between the figures.
Cranach employs a stark, linear style characteristic of early sixteenth-century German printmaking. The composition relies on bold, hatched lines to define form and shadow, creating a sense of volume despite the absence of colour. The background is relatively sparse, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the divine figure and the saint. Small cherubic heads emerge from clouds above, adding a celestial element to the scene. The work reflects the period's interest in personal piety and the use of devotional prints to aid in private meditation.
As a leading figure of the German Renaissance, Cranach produced numerous woodcuts that circulated widely across Europe. This particular print demonstrates his ability to translate complex theological concepts into accessible visual narratives. The contrast between the suffering Christ and the humble monk provides a clear focal point for the viewer. The precision of the woodcutting technique, particularly in the rendering of the fabric folds and the anatomical details of the figures, reveals the technical skill of the artist and his workshop. This print remains a representative example of the graphic output from the Wittenberg circle during the early Reformation era, capturing the intersection of traditional religious iconography and the burgeoning print culture of the time.
