A detailed Baroque etching by Simone Cantarini depicting the dramatic scene of Saint Benedict performing an exorcism.
This etching by Simone Cantarini depicts the dramatic narrative of Saint Benedict performing an exorcism. Cantarini, a student of Guido Reni, adopted the Bolognese tradition of clear, rhythmic compositions and fluid line work. The scene captures a moment of high tension, with the central figure of the possessed individual being supported by others, while Saint Benedict stands to the left, his posture calm and authoritative. The surrounding figures react with varied expressions of concern and awe, creating a sense of movement across the frame.
Cantarini uses the etching needle to define form through hatching and cross-hatching, which provides volume to the drapery and depth to the figures. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to stay on the interaction between the saint and the afflicted. The composition follows the classic Baroque interest in theatricality and emotional response, yet it maintains a restraint typical of the artist's training in the Reni school. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy and expressive gestures, which were hallmarks of the period's approach to religious art. This print demonstrates the technical proficiency of Cantarini, who was considered one of the most talented etchers of his generation in Italy. The work reflects the period's interest in hagiography and the visual representation of miraculous events, presented here with a focus on human reaction and physical presence rather than supernatural artifice. The print is a fine example of seventeenth-century Italian printmaking, showing the influence of classical models on the Baroque aesthetic.
