A detailed 17th-century engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicting Saint Barbara with her traditional attributes of a palm branch and sword.
This engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicts Saint Barbara, a figure traditionally associated with protection against sudden death. The composition follows the conventions of Dutch Golden Age printmaking, utilising precise line work to define the saint's form and the surrounding environment. Barbara is shown in a moment of spiritual contemplation, gazing upward toward a putto who descends from the clouds to offer her a palm branch, the traditional symbol of martyrdom.
Bolswert employs a range of hatching techniques to create depth and texture, particularly in the heavy folds of the saint's robes and the dramatic, swirling clouds above. To the right, a fortress tower is visible, referencing the legend of Barbara's imprisonment. A sword lies prominently in the foreground, serving as a reminder of her execution. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides a narrative context for the scene, a common feature in devotional prints of the period intended for private study or collection.
As a master engraver, Bolswert was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate the painterly qualities of contemporary works into the medium of print. This piece demonstrates his command over light and shadow, using the stark contrast of the monochrome medium to focus the viewer's attention on the saint's expression and the symbolic objects that define her identity. The work reflects the period's interest in hagiography and the dissemination of religious imagery through high-quality print production.
