A refined tempera panel by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, depicting Saint Agnes with her traditional lamb attribute, crafted in the Sienese style.
This work by Ambrogio Lorenzetti depicts Saint Agnes, a figure identified by the lamb she holds, which serves as a traditional attribute referencing her name and purity. The painting is executed in the tempera medium on a triangular wooden panel, a format common for the upper sections of polyptychs or altarpieces produced in fourteenth-century Siena. Lorenzetti, a master of the Sienese School, employs a refined approach to form and colour that characterises his contribution to the development of Italian painting.
The saint is shown in a three-quarter profile, her gaze directed towards the lamb held within a circular medallion. The composition is constrained by the triangular frame, yet the figure maintains a sense of grace and poise. The halo, incised with delicate patterns, surrounds her head, while her garments are decorated with geometric motifs that demonstrate the artist's attention to textile detail. The use of gold leaf and pigments typical of the period creates a surface that reflects light, adding to the devotional quality of the image.
Lorenzetti was active during a period when Sienese art moved away from the rigid Byzantine style towards a more humanised representation of religious figures. This panel displays the soft modelling of the face and the fluid lines that distinguish his work from his contemporaries. The lamb, rendered with care, acts as a symbolic anchor for the composition. As a piece of medieval religious art, it provides insight into the visual culture of the Trecento, where such panels were intended to inspire contemplation within a church setting. The preservation of the original triangular frame allows for an appreciation of how the work functioned as part of a larger architectural and spiritual structure.
