Maurice de Vlaminck, a self-taught painter and key figure in the Fauvist movement, produced this work during his formative years in the early twentieth century. The painting captures the river Seine at Chatou, a location frequently visited by artists of the period for its proximity to Paris and its industrialised riverbanks. Vlaminck applies paint with a direct, energetic approach, favouring thick, visible brushstrokes that convey the movement of water and the weight of the stone bridge structure.

The composition is dominated by the heavy, ochre-toned arches of the bridge, which frame the scene and create a sense of enclosure. To the left, a sailboat with a prominent white sail provides a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal lines of the bridge.
