An impressionist study of the Seine valley by Alfred Sisley, capturing the light and atmosphere of a morning in the meadows of Sahurs.
Alfred Sisley painted this work during his time in the village of Sahurs, located along the banks of the Seine in Normandy. The composition captures the specific atmospheric conditions of a morning in late summer. Sisley focuses on the interplay between the golden, sun-drenched meadow and the deep, cool shadows cast by the trees on the left side of the frame.
The brushwork is characteristic of Sisley's mature period. He employs short, rhythmic strokes to define the texture of the tall grasses and the foliage of the trees. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, rendered in pale blues and soft whites that suggest a light breeze. In the distance, the low hills are painted with muted tones, providing a sense of depth that contrasts with the immediate foreground.
Sisley remained committed to the principles of plein air painting throughout his career. He sought to capture the fleeting effects of light and weather rather than the permanent structure of the scene. This work demonstrates his ability to balance colour and light, creating a sense of calm observation. The presence of a small figure in the middle distance provides a sense of scale, grounding the viewer within the vastness of the meadow. The palette is dominated by natural tones, ranging from the warm ochres of the field to the varied greens of the vegetation and the expansive blue of the sky. This piece reflects the artist's focus on the rural environment of France, a subject he returned to repeatedly during his years living outside of Paris.
