Prout was a master of the picturesque, a style that prioritised the visual appeal of aged, weathered architecture and the daily life of European towns. His work was highly popular among British travellers who sought to capture the essence of the Continent through art.

The composition depicts a street scene in the Sachsenhausen district of Frankfurt. Prout focuses on the timber-framed buildings, which display the characteristic jettied upper storeys and heavy structural beams common in medieval German construction. He employs a delicate line quality, using ink to define the textures of stone and wood before applying a restrained watercolour wash.
