This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsen depicts the Ryogoku Bridge, a site of significant activity in Edo-period Japan. The composition is contained within a scalloped frame, a characteristic format for uchiwa-e, or fan prints. These prints were designed to be mounted onto rigid, paddle-shaped fans, which served as both functional cooling tools and portable art objects for the urban population of Edo.
The scene captures the bridge spanning the Sumida River, with small boats navigating the water below. In the foreground, the bustling activity of the riverbank is rendered with precise, economical lines. The artist employs a high vantage point to organise the various elements, from the architectural structure of the bridge to the figures gathered near the water. The surrounding calligraphy provides context, typical of the integration between text and image found in Japanese print culture of the early nineteenth century.
Katsukawa Shunsen, a student of Katsukawa Shunsho, was active during a period when ukiyo-e artists increasingly turned their attention to topographical subjects and scenes of daily life. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to produce clear, legible imagery within the constraints of a fan-shaped format. The monochromatic ink application emphasises the graphic quality of the work, focusing on the clarity of the line rather than colour.
