Ruthin gathers around a massive red-stone gatehouse, whose battlements and arched entrance set a strong medieval presence against the rolling Denbighshire hills in North Wales.

Sunlight catches the uneven blocks of the fortified structure, bringing out narrow slit windows, projecting corner turrets and a deep central passage.
