This hanging scroll by the Ming Dynasty painter Zhou Wenjing depicts a quiet scene of rural life along a riverbank. The composition follows the traditional format of Chinese ink wash painting, where the artist balances solid forms with expansive areas of negative space. A small boat carrying two figures occupies the lower centre, moving across the water towards a modest dwelling nestled among trees. The distant, hazy mountains suggest a vast, atmospheric depth, a common technique used to evoke a sense of solitude and distance from the bustle of urban life.
Zhou Wenjing was active during the mid-15th century and served as a painter at the imperial court. His work often reflects the influence of the Southern Song academic style, particularly in the treatment of the weeping willow and the gentle, rhythmic strokes used to define the water.
