A serene pastoral scene by Jacob van Strij, depicting cattle resting by a pool under a vast, light-filled sky.
Jacob van Strij, a painter from Dordrecht, produced this work during a period when Dutch artists looked back to the seventeenth-century masters for inspiration. The composition features a group of cattle resting on a grassy bank near a pool, a subject that echoes the works of Aelbert Cuyp. Van Strij was known for his ability to capture the specific atmospheric conditions of the Dutch countryside, particularly the play of light across expansive, low-lying meadows.
The painting is structured around a wide, horizontal view that emphasises the vastness of the sky. The clouds are rendered with soft, diffused light, suggesting a calm afternoon. In the foreground, the cattle are depicted with careful attention to their individual forms and textures. Their placement creates a sense of quietude, typical of the pastoral tradition. To the left, the distant water features small sailing vessels, providing a subtle contrast between the agricultural foreground and the maritime activity of the region.
Van Strij utilised a palette of earthy tones, greens, and soft blues to unify the scene. The brushwork is precise, allowing for the clear definition of the animals and the surrounding vegetation without appearing overly rigid. This approach reflects the technical discipline of the era, where the goal was to achieve a harmonious balance between natural observation and classical composition. The work provides a window into the rural life of the Netherlands at the turn of the nineteenth century, capturing a moment of stillness in the natural world. It remains a representative example of the artist's focus on the traditional themes of Dutch painting, adapted to the sensibilities of his own time.
