This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitomi belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists documented the arrival of foreigners. These prints provided the Japanese public with visual information about the appearance, dress, and customs of visitors from Europe and the Americas.
The subject is a Russian man mounted on a horse. The artist employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines common to the Ukiyo-e tradition. The rider wears a dark, structured coat and a cap, reflecting the Western military or diplomatic attire that fascinated Japanese observers at the time. A sword hangs at his side, suggesting his status or official role. The horse is rendered with a stylised muscularity, its coat a warm, reddish-brown tone that contrasts with the rider's dark clothing and the neutral background.
