A delicate depiction of a Ballets Russes performance in Paris, captured with the atmospheric, dreamlike quality characteristic of Konstantin Somov.
Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, produced this work in 1932. It captures a performance of the Ballets Russes at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The composition employs a theatrical perspective, placing the viewer behind the orchestra pit, looking toward the stage. The conductor is visible in the foreground, his baton raised, while the audience occupies the dimly lit boxes to the left.
On stage, the dancers are rendered in ethereal, pale tones, their white tutus contrasting against the soft, atmospheric backdrop of a forest scene. Somov uses a delicate application of gouache and watercolour to suggest the hazy, artificial light of the theatre. The figures appear weightless, echoing the romantic traditions of classical ballet that the Ballets Russes sought to revive and modernise during their Parisian tenure.
Somov was known for his interest in the eighteenth century, masquerades, and the artifice of performance. This piece reflects his fascination with the intersection of reality and theatre. The blurred edges and muted palette create a sense of distance, as if the viewer is observing a fleeting moment from the shadows of the auditorium. The work avoids sharp definition, favouring a dreamlike quality that aligns with the artist's broader interest in nostalgia and the ephemeral nature of stagecraft. By focusing on the interplay between the performers and the surrounding environment, Somov captures the specific mood of a night at the ballet, where the boundary between the stage and the observer becomes porous.
