A classic Zenga ink painting by the eccentric Zen monk Ikkyū Sōjun, depicting the legendary master Chen Puxie with his rush sandals.
This hanging scroll depicts the legendary Chan master Chen Puxie, known for his unconventional behaviour and his signature rush sandals. Attributed to the eccentric Zen monk Ikkyū Sōjun, the work embodies the aesthetic of Zenga, where the economy of ink and brushwork conveys spiritual insight rather than literal representation. The figure of Chen Puxie is rendered with minimal, fluid lines, capturing a moment of relaxed contemplation. His posture, seated with his sandals held in his hands, reflects the Zen emphasis on spontaneity and the rejection of rigid formality.
The upper portion of the scroll features extensive calligraphy, a common element in Zen painting. The text provides context for the figure, linking the visual image to the philosophical teachings of the Chan tradition. The ink wash is applied with varying pressure, creating a sense of movement within the static figure. The paper, aged to a warm, muted tone, provides a neutral background that allows the black ink to remain the primary focus. This piece is representative of Ikkyū's approach to art, which often utilised humour and irony to communicate complex Buddhist concepts to a wider audience. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the subject and the accompanying text, avoiding unnecessary decorative elements that might distract from the core message.
As a fine art print, this work retains the texture and tonal depth of the original ink on paper. It offers a glimpse into the intellectual and artistic climate of 15th-century Japan, where the boundaries between calligraphy, painting, and religious practice were fluid. The print captures the specific character of the brushstrokes, from the bold, dark lines of the calligraphy to the lighter, more delicate outlines of the figure. It is a piece that invites quiet observation, consistent with the meditative nature of its subject matter.
