A collection of graphite sketches by Willem Westbroek, featuring equestrian figures and character studies rendered with fluid, spontaneous lines.
This composition by Dutch artist Willem Westbroek presents a dual-study format, typical of the artist's working methods. The upper portion features a figure mounted on horseback, rendered with minimal, fluid lines that prioritise gesture over anatomical precision. The horse and rider are captured in a state of motion, with the artist employing light, rhythmic strokes to define the forms against the blank paper surface.
The lower section of the sheet shifts focus to a more structured scene. A rider in a formal coat and hat sits atop a spotted horse, positioned within a simplified outdoor setting that includes a distant building. Below this, Westbroek includes a series of three distinct facial studies. These heads are drawn with a focus on character and expression, utilising simple outlines to suggest personality and mood. The overall approach is one of spontaneity, reflecting the artist's interest in capturing immediate observations and fleeting ideas.
Westbroek, a figure within the Dutch mid-twentieth-century art scene, often produced works that balance observation with a degree of abstraction. His draughtsmanship here is direct and unadorned, allowing the viewer to observe the progression of his thought process. The paper shows signs of age, including minor discolouration and handling marks, which provide a sense of the work's history as a functional studio piece. This print captures the raw, authentic quality of the original graphite marks, preserving the texture of the pencil and the subtle variations in line weight. It is a study of form and movement, offering a glimpse into the private creative practice of the artist.
