A detailed seventeenth-century etching of Roman ruins near Misenum, capturing the intersection of classical architecture and pastoral life.
This etching depicts the ancient ruins near Misenum, a site historically associated with the villa of Lucius Licinius Lucullus. Published by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, the print captures the architectural remnants of the Roman period, characterised by vaulted chambers and masonry that have weathered over centuries. The composition balances the structural weight of the ruins on the left with an open, pastoral scene on the right, where figures and livestock occupy the foreground.
The artist employs precise line work to define the textures of the stone, the foliage, and the distant horizon. The inclusion of human figures provides a sense of scale, contrasting the permanence of the ancient architecture with the transient nature of daily life. Below the image, an Italian inscription provides historical context, identifying the location and its connection to the Roman past. This type of print was common in the seventeenth century, as collectors and travellers sought to document the classical sites of Italy through detailed engravings.
Technically, the work demonstrates the clarity typical of the de' Rossi publishing house, which operated in Rome and produced a vast catalogue of maps, architectural views, and historical subjects. The etching process allows for fine detail in the shading of the arches and the subtle modelling of the terrain. As a piece of historical documentation, it offers a window into how these classical sites appeared to observers in the early modern period, long before modern archaeological preservation efforts. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, maintaining the original tonal range and the crispness of the etched lines.
