A hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicting the biblical figures of Ruben and Simeon, presented in two distinct narrative panels.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical figures of Ruben and Simeon, two of the sons of Jacob. The work is divided into two distinct panels, each presenting a narrative scene from the Old Testament. On the left, Ruben is shown in a pastoral setting, accompanied by a cow and a goat, reflecting his role as the firstborn. On the right, the composition shifts to a more martial tone, featuring Simeon in armour with a sword and shield, standing over fallen figures. The engraving style is characteristic of the late sixteenth-century Flemish school, employing precise line work to define the figures and the surrounding environment.
The print includes Latin inscriptions at the base of each panel, providing context for the figures and their respective stories. The application of colour, likely added after the initial printing, enhances the visual distinction between the two brothers. The background elements, including the distant hills and the smoke rising from a structure on the left, provide a sense of place while maintaining the flattened perspective common in period book illustrations. Sadeler, a prolific engraver of his time, worked with various publishers, including Gerard de Jode, whose name appears on the print. This piece reflects the technical proficiency of the Sadeler family, who were instrumental in the dissemination of religious and mythological imagery across Europe during the late Renaissance. The work serves as a clear example of the narrative-driven print culture that flourished in the Low Countries, where biblical themes were frequently adapted for educational and devotional purposes. The attention to detail in the clothing, weaponry, and animal forms demonstrates the high standard of craftsmanship expected in professional printmaking workshops of the era.
