A detailed lithograph by Thomas Shotter Boys capturing a bustling market scene in the town of Roye, Picardy, from the Voyages pittoresques series.
This lithograph by Thomas Shotter Boys depicts the town square of Roye in the Picardy region of France. It was produced for the ambitious publication, Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France, a multi-volume project initiated by Baron Taylor, Charles Nodier, and Alphonse de Cailleux. The series aimed to document the architectural heritage of France, capturing sites that were often in states of decay or transition during the nineteenth century.
Boys, a skilled watercolourist and printmaker, demonstrates his technical proficiency in this work. The composition is dominated by a large, timber-framed building on the right, which exhibits the characteristic cross-bracing and decorative woodwork of the period. The artist balances this heavy architectural mass with the open space of the square, where a bustling market scene unfolds. Figures in period attire are scattered throughout the foreground, providing a sense of scale and daily activity. The background features a more formal, classical structure with a clock face, offering a contrast to the medieval vernacular style of the timber-framed house.
As a lithograph, the print relies on tonal variation rather than line work to define form. Boys uses the medium to suggest the texture of stone, wood, and fabric, creating a convincing atmospheric depth. The sky is rendered with subtle washes, allowing the focus to remain on the architectural details and the social life of the town. This work provides a record of French provincial life and architecture before the industrial changes of the later century altered the appearance of such towns. It is a fine example of the topographical tradition that flourished in Britain and France during the Romantic era, where artists sought to preserve the visual character of historical locations through precise observation and technical skill.
