An expressive portrait by Neil Welliver, featuring bold brushwork and a non-traditional colour palette.
Neil Welliver is widely recognised for his large-scale depictions of the Maine wilderness, yet his earlier career included a period of intense focus on the human figure. This portrait, titled Royal Head, demonstrates the artist's early engagement with expressionistic brushwork and a bold, non-naturalistic colour palette. Unlike his later, more methodical approach to painting nature, this work prioritises the physical application of paint and the distortion of facial features to convey a specific psychological presence.
The composition is dominated by the subject's face, which occupies nearly the entire frame. Welliver employs thick, gestural strokes to define the contours of the head and the texture of the beard. The colour choices are unconventional: the skin tones are rendered in shades of pink and grey, while the background is a stark, flat green. This contrast creates a sense of spatial ambiguity, pushing the figure forward and forcing the viewer to confront the subject directly. The collar of the shirt is painted with looser, more abstract marks, providing a visual counterpoint to the more structured, albeit distorted, facial features.
Welliver's technique here reflects a departure from traditional portraiture. He does not seek to capture a likeness in the academic sense, but rather to explore the materiality of oil paint. The surface of the canvas is active, with visible tracks of the brush remaining as evidence of the artist's process. This work offers a glimpse into the formative years of an artist who would eventually become a master of light and atmosphere in the American landscape tradition. It remains a compelling example of his ability to manipulate form and colour to create a singular, arresting image.
