A dynamic seascape by French Post-Impressionist Henri Moret, 'Rough Sea' captures the energy of the ocean through bold brushwork and a vivid palette of blues, greens, and golds.
Henri Moret (1856-1913) was a French Post-Impressionist painter known for his depictions of the Brittany coastline. Born in Cherbourg, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jean-Paul Laurens. Moret was associated with the Pont-Aven School, a group of artists who gathered in the Breton village of Pont-Aven. He developed a distinctive style characterised by bold brushwork and a concern for capturing the effects of light and atmosphere. 'Rough Sea' exemplifies Moret's approach to seascape painting. The composition focuses on the turbulent surface of the water, rendered with thick, impasto strokes of blue, green, and gold. The sky, a mix of blues and whites, suggests a dynamic, changeable weather system. The horizon line is placed high, emphasising the expanse of the sea. Moret's technique captures the movement and energy of the waves, conveying a sense of the raw power of nature. The painting's loose, expressive brushwork aligns it with the Post-Impressionist aesthetic, prioritising subjective experience over strict realism.
