A 1927 maritime study by Nicolae Vermont, capturing the industrial atmosphere of Rotterdam harbour with rhythmic brushwork and a focus on light.
Nicolae Vermont, a significant figure in Romanian art, produced this maritime study during his later career. The work captures the industrial atmosphere of the Rotterdam harbour in 1927. Vermont employs a technique characterised by visible, rhythmic brushwork that prioritises the movement of light over precise architectural detail. The composition is divided between a heavy, cloud-filled sky and the choppy, reflective surface of the water.
The palette relies on muted earth tones, ochres, and greys, punctuated by the cooler blues and greens of the harbour water. Small touches of red and dark blue define the hulls of the vessels, providing a visual anchor within the fluid environment. The sky occupies the majority of the frame, rendered with thick, impasto applications of paint that suggest the shifting weather patterns common to the North Sea coast.
Vermont studied in Munich and Paris, influences that are evident in his approach to light and atmosphere. Unlike his earlier, more academic portraits, this work demonstrates a shift toward a freer, more observational style. The ships are reduced to essential forms, their masts and funnels creating vertical interruptions against the horizontal expanse of the horizon. This piece offers a glimpse into the European maritime trade centres of the early twentieth century, viewed through the lens of an artist interested in the transient qualities of light and water. The lack of human figures focuses the viewer entirely on the interplay between the industrial machinery of the port and the natural elements surrounding it.
