A refined 1785 engraving by Johann Friedrich Bause, depicting a young child in a window frame, based on a painting by Caspar Netscher.
This engraving by Johann Friedrich Bause, dated 1785, depicts a young child positioned within a trompe l'oeil stone window frame. The subject, known as Rosetta, is rendered with the technical precision characteristic of Bause, a German engraver who gained recognition for his ability to translate the nuances of oil paintings into the medium of copperplate engraving. The original composition was painted by Caspar Netscher, a Dutch Golden Age artist whose influence is visible in the soft handling of the child's curls and the delicate rendering of the fabric.
The print employs a sophisticated use of light and shadow to create a sense of depth. The child leans forward, resting her hands upon a basket of flowers, which provides a gentle contrast to the structured, architectural framing of the window. Bause uses fine hatching and stippling techniques to achieve a range of tonal values, from the deep blacks of the interior space to the luminous highlights on the child's skin and clothing. The composition follows the popular eighteenth-century convention of the 'niche portrait', which invites the viewer to engage with the subject as if they are peering through an opening into a private, domestic sphere.
Bause was a prolific artist based in Leipzig, where he produced numerous reproductions of works by both contemporary and historical masters. His work reflects the high standards of German printmaking during the late Enlightenment period. This particular piece demonstrates his skill in capturing the texture of materials, such as the silk of the dress and the soft petals of the flowers, while maintaining a balanced, harmonious composition. The print remains a fine example of the reproductive engraving tradition, where the engraver acted as a bridge between the original painter and the wider public, ensuring that the aesthetic qualities of the source work were preserved through meticulous line work and tonal control.
