This diptych by Hasegawa Gyokuhō belongs to the kachō-ga tradition, a genre focused on the depiction of birds and flowers. Gyokuhō, a practitioner of the Nihonga style, maintains a balance between traditional Japanese aesthetic values and the observational precision common in early twentieth-century painting. The work presents two vertical hanging scrolls, each featuring delicate botanical arrangements paired with small avian subjects.
The composition relies on the use of negative space, a characteristic feature of East Asian ink painting. The branches of the rose bushes extend across the silk surface with a sense of natural growth, while the sparrows are rendered with careful attention to their plumage and posture. The colour palette remains restrained, utilising soft pinks, muted greens, and earthy tones to suggest the seasonal transition of the flora.
