A botanical illustration by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, 'Rosa Bengale The Hymenes' features a Bengal rose with delicate white and pink petals, accompanied by two butterflies. This print exemplifies Redouté's skill in botanical illustration.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was a Belgian painter and botanist, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies, and other flowers at Malmaison, and was nicknamed 'the Raphael of flowers'. He was an official court artist of Queen Marie Antoinette, and continued painting through the French Revolution and reign of Napoléon Bonaparte. 'Rosa Bengale The Hymenes' depicts a Bengal rose, also known as the China rose, with two butterflies. The rose is shown with white petals tinged with pink, and the leaves are a deep green. Two butterflies, one copper and one blue, add a touch of life to the composition. The print is a fine example of Redouté's skill in capturing the beauty and detail of flowers. His prints were highly sought after by collectors and botanists alike, and they remain popular today for their beauty and scientific accuracy. The stipple engraving technique, printed in colour and finished by hand, allowed for a high level of detail and realism.
