A detailed botanical illustration of a white rose, Rosa Alba Foliacea, by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. This stipple engraving captures the delicate texture and structure of the flower with precision.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was a Belgian-French botanist and artist, known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers at Malmaison, and for his publication 'Les Roses'. He was nicknamed 'the Raphael of flowers' and has been called the greatest botanical illustrator of all time. Redouté was an official court artist of Queen Marie Antoinette, and continued painting through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. 'Rosa Alba Foliacea' presents a detailed study of the white rose. The composition focuses on the plant's structure, showcasing its leaves, stem, buds, and the fully opened flower. The rose is rendered with precision, capturing the delicate texture of the petals and the subtle variations in colour. The leaves are depicted with careful attention to their veining and shape, contributing to the overall naturalism of the illustration. The background is kept plain, ensuring that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the botanical subject.
