Watanabe Seitei, also known as Watanabe Shōtei, was a prominent figure in the Meiji period art scene. He trained under Kikuchi Yōsai and later studied Western painting techniques, which he integrated into the traditional Nihonga style. This work demonstrates his mastery of the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. The composition features a large white rooster and a hen, accompanied by three small chicks, positioned against a minimalist background. The artist employs a calligraphic brush technique to render the bamboo stalks in the upper left, using varying ink washes to suggest depth and movement. In contrast, the poultry are depicted with precise, delicate strokes that capture the texture of their feathers. The rooster's comb is rendered in a muted red, providing a subtle contrast to the soft, creamy tones of the plumage. Seitei was one of the first Japanese artists to gain recognition in the West, having exhibited at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1878.
