A delicate Nihonga study of a poultry family by Watanabe Seitei, capturing the birds with precise brushwork and a soft, naturalistic palette.
Watanabe Seitei, also known as Watanabe Shōtei, was a prominent figure in the Meiji period art scene. He trained under Kikuchi Yōsai and later studied Western painting techniques, which he integrated into the traditional Nihonga style. This work demonstrates his mastery of the kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. The composition features a large white rooster and a hen, accompanied by three small chicks, positioned against a minimalist background. The artist employs a calligraphic brush technique to render the bamboo stalks in the upper left, using varying ink washes to suggest depth and movement. In contrast, the poultry are depicted with precise, delicate strokes that capture the texture of their feathers. The rooster's comb is rendered in a muted red, providing a subtle contrast to the soft, creamy tones of the plumage. The chicks are observed with a keen eye for naturalistic detail, their small forms huddled near the parents as they forage. Seitei was one of the first Japanese artists to gain recognition in the West, having exhibited at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1878. His work is characterised by a balance between the observational rigour of Western art and the fluid, expressive qualities of traditional Japanese ink painting. This piece reflects his ability to capture a quiet, domestic moment in nature with economy and grace. The negative space surrounding the subjects allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the birds, creating a sense of stillness. The work is mounted on a neutral silk ground, typical of the period, which complements the understated palette of the painting itself. Through his careful observation, Seitei elevates a common farmyard scene into a refined study of form and character.
