A minimalist ink wash study of a rooster and chick, demonstrating the fluid brushwork and expressive economy of the Hokusai School.
This work, attributed to the Hokusai School, demonstrates the economy of line and brushwork characteristic of the Japanese ink wash tradition. The composition focuses on the interaction between a rooster and a chick, rendered through varying densities of black ink. The artist employs a calligraphic approach, where the weight of the brush stroke defines the form of the rooster's plumage, moving from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, translucent washes that suggest volume and texture without the need for outlines.
The rooster occupies the centre of the frame, its tail feathers fanning out in a series of bold, sweeping strokes. Beside it, the smaller chick is depicted with minimal detail, yet its posture conveys a sense of movement and presence. The negative space surrounding the figures is as important as the ink itself, providing a sense of air and environment that is typical of traditional East Asian painting. This approach relies on the viewer to complete the image, a technique that prioritises suggestion over literal representation.
Works from the Hokusai School often reflect the master's own interest in the observation of nature. While Katsushika Hokusai is known for his woodblock prints, his students and followers frequently produced sketches and paintings that explored similar themes of animal life and movement. This piece captures a fleeting moment, frozen in time through the deliberate application of ink. The paper texture remains visible, adding a tactile quality to the print. It is a study in balance, showing how a few well-placed marks can communicate the essence of a subject. The lack of colour ensures that the focus remains entirely on the rhythm of the brush and the interplay of light and shadow created by the ink density.
