An etching by Esaias van de Velde, 'Ronde toren met een poort' depicts a ruined round tower reflected in calm water, with figures and sheep on the bank, rendered in fine lines and subtle shading.
Esaias van de Velde (1587-1630) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker, known for his contributions to the development of realist landscape painting in the Netherlands. He was a student of Gillis van Coninxloo and influenced artists such as Pieter de Molijn and Jan van Goyen. Van de Velde's work often depicts scenes of daily life, battles, and landscapes with a keen eye for detail and atmosphere. 'Ronde toren met een poort' presents a serene waterside view dominated by a ruined round tower. The tower, constructed of rough-hewn stones, features an arched gateway at its base. The reflection of the tower shimmers in the calm water, where a small boat is moored. On the bank, figures tend to a flock of sheep, adding a pastoral element to the scene. A slender tree on the right side balances the composition, its delicate branches reaching towards the sky. The etching technique captures the textures of the stone, foliage, and water with fine lines and subtle shading.
