A detailed ink and wash drawing by Willem Romeyn, depicting a shepherd with his flock amidst the imposing stone arches of Roman ruins.
This drawing by Willem Romeyn captures the fascination Dutch artists of the seventeenth century held for the Italian countryside. Romeyn, a member of the Bentvueghels, spent time in Rome, where he produced numerous studies of classical architecture integrated with pastoral life. The work features the weathered, monumental remains of a Roman structure, rendered with precise pen work and subtle grey washes to suggest the texture of ancient stone and the play of light across the masonry.
In the foreground, a shepherd rests near a small flock of sheep and goats. This inclusion of figures is typical of the Italianate style, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the imposing, decaying architecture. The composition relies on the contrast between the solid, geometric forms of the ruins and the soft, organic shapes of the animals. Romeyn uses the wash to create depth, allowing the light to filter through the arches and illuminate the ground where the flock gathers. The drawing reflects the period's interest in the juxtaposition of classical antiquity with the mundane activities of rural life. It is a study of atmosphere and form, demonstrating the artist's ability to balance architectural detail with the quietude of a pastoral scene. The work remains a clear example of the Dutch interpretation of the Roman Campagna, focusing on the aesthetic qualities of ruin and the enduring nature of the Mediterranean environment.
